Our Story

Located in Sydney’s inner west suburb of Marrickville, Papaya Grill Lao Restaurant is the vision of two brothers of Lao heritage rediscovering their roots through their passion of food.

After a family trip back to Laos, we were inspired to reconnect with our background and the best way we knew how was through food.

Our parents met by a papaya tree in Luang Prabang, the UNESCO World Heritage town in Laos, where our mum had a street store selling papaya salad. The importance of this tree is reflected in the Papaya Grill logo. The exposed tree roots symbolise rediscovering our roots as well as the strong family foundation we have come from.

The menu is inspired by traditional recipes & home cooking, the simple food we remember growing up eating. Lao cuisine is a marriage of sweet, sour and spicy flavours combined with fresh herbs and ingredients. It is a cuisine that is still new to many people and we are excited to bring a taste of Laos to Sydneysiders.

Our dishes are best shared by the table and most fun eaten the traditional Lao way, with your hands. At Papaya Grill, we invite you to create your own food memories with your family and friends.
